Commuting

Commuting

You are not stuck in traffic. You are traffic. Break free. Ride a bike.

When we were house shopping, commute time to my work was a very important part of the decision. We were quite adamant about it and had even picked out a neighborhood. Nevertheless, our real estate agent found it difficult to believe. We were shown several houses that were “only 15 minutes farther away” and supposedly cost less. Ultimately, we got our way and paid a little bit more for a shorter commute.

Now as I leave work and turn onto the street riding my bike, I see cars lined up to get on the freeway and I smile to myself because I know that I will be home before they get to the on ramp. I ran across this article the other day written by a fellow Coloradan and found out that not only am I not stuck in traffic, but that living close to work will make me rich too. I feel so vindicated.

  1. Much is said about the simple things in life. Actions speak louder than words. I hear you. Time is the commodity most seem to forget. Use yours wisely and you are rich.

  2. I am thinking by next summer I will have one of those three wheel trikes with a big basket on the back. However, for me it will take me three times as long to get anywhere peddling around at my speed.

  3. That’s how we decided where to live too. We only looked within a 5 mile radius of Than’s work. Some people we live by commute to Lehi, Draper and even to SLC! I think all of them moved here AFTER having gotten their current jobs too. It just baffles me. – Lina

Amen to that! In addition to all the money savings and time savings of riding my bike to work, I just LIKE it. It’s good to get some fresh air and exercise in the morning on the way to work, and it’s nice to get the blood pumping again on the way home. Keep up the good work! – Nathaniel

  4. This is so nice. Poor Justin has a 1hr and 15minute commute by shuttle, subway, and a few blocks by foot. His 15 minute commute in Denver this summer was a dream!
