Lessons Learned

Lessons Learned

Today I officially resigned my post as a substitute teacher. While I definitely wouldn’t say it was my favorite job, it has had some valuable personal benefits (earning points towards keeping my license current, developing really great “teacher looks,” etc). Overall, my favorite parts were the insightful things students taught me. Here are some of my favorites: Lady Ga Ga is a “musical genius.” Having more kids is often “the worst mistake of a mother’s life.” 7th graders are still…

I’m Tired of Not Being an Adult

I’m Tired of Not Being an Adult

Right now I am working at what I believe will be my last “student job” (Student Teaching doesn’t count because I’m not getting paid, but am actually paying for the experience).  Currently, I work in an office where I am the same age as the girl in the office next to me, she however is not a student employee since she graduated from a major that has a more traditional graduation time-line.  One of the tasks I, the indentured servant,…

Power’s Out

Power’s Out

I arrived at work this morning to find that a transformer had blew and the power was out. However, since some of the projects that go on at the company are very important (ie costs millions of $) everyone’s computers and experiments are hooked up to generators. The secretary made an announcement that the power might be on in the next couple of hours. Everyone remains diligently at their desks acting as if it were a normal Monday, sending emails,…

I shouldn’t be awake this early

I shouldn’t be awake this early

It’s a beautiful spring morning here in Logan. Well, not exactly. I’ve been here at work since 4am this morning babysitting a test and I’m just surfing the web, attempting homework and listening to NPR. I know, that’s lame. I just thought I’d share with you all the pearls of wisdom I’ve found: Adult Americans (me too) spend an average of 8 hours a day in front of some sort of screen. I’d suggest going outside and smelling the flowers…if…

At least I’ll have a job

At least I’ll have a job

So, I went to a social for Tau Beta Pi, an engineering group on campus I’m involved with (I know–engineering social–it’s an oxymoron), and they mentioned that engineering is one of the top careers to have during a recession. The sad thing is why: Mechanical Engineer (and all engineering fields). With every passing year, more skilled-labor jobs are replaced by complex automation or robotics systems. For example, some hospitals have turned to “robotic pharmacies” to help dispense medication. It’s the…

Connections

Connections

After preparing all summer, all 1611 students enrolled in USU Connections arrived on campus . . . ready for me to entertain them. Luckily I had my boss (Noelle), 60 Connections instructors, and the wonderful A-team and Honors Peer Mentors to back me up. I don’t know if the kids born in 89-90 are a better bunch (special shout out to sister Hope and sister-in-law Vanessa) or if I was just better at my job the second time around, but…

Going Postal

Going Postal

I just started a job working at the post office a couple of days ago. Just one word of advice: be nice to your local postal worker. We really don’t just sit around reading your catalogs. There’s a very good reason so many of us go crazy. Also, avoid sending anything registered mail or COD as they both require various forms and tedium. I had this idea that working for the postal service would make it so that my mission…
