Christmas 2012 – The Last Year of Oblivion

Celebrating Christmas with little kids is awesome. Neither Cooper nor Ellen had any idea that Christmas was coming or that presents would be exchanged. They didn’t give any thought to a certain man in a red suit and they didn’t search the house for where I hid their gifts. They marveled at our tree, enjoyed playing with the nativities we set up around the house, and snuggled into bed while we sang them Christmas Carols about baby Jesus, but for the most part they were blissfully unaware that life was any different than normal. This made for the best Christmas Eve and morning ever. They went to bed with the typical amount of fuss and we were able to quickly lay out all the presents. Noel and I then watched A Christmas Story, drank hot chocolate, and went to bed at a reasonable hour. In the morning, everyone woke up at their usual time. (Which is truthfully as early as most excited young kids get up, but there’s nothing we can do about that no matter what day of the year it is.) We were able to smuggle them into the dining room and into their high chairs without catching sight of the wonders in the living room. Then after everyone had eaten breakfast, we were able to watch their excitement and surprise with happily full bellies. I have a feeling this may be our last year void of hyperactive anticipation, but it was so glorious while it lasted.

  1. Those grandkids are precious and will always be precious in my eyes. Christmas can be a distraction, but it will always be my favorite time of the year.
