The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread

This is probably the most exciting thing to happen to me since seeing a woman in Park City pushing a cat in a stroller. Anyway, I’ve been itching to make really good artisan-type bread for a while now. Problem is you have to have hours of free time to mix it, knead it, let it rise, knead it again, etc. I’m afraid to say I don’t have that kind of time available, and if I did, I don’t have that…

“We Were Worried About the Word ‘Receptionist’”

“We Were Worried About the Word ‘Receptionist’”

Some of you may remember that back in the Spring a couple of my collegeaus and I participated in a regional peer tutoring conference in Boise. While some of you may have thought that was dorky, the presentation earned me (and two of my colleagues) a trip to Vegas where we got to perform our monologues at a national conference. The monologues are loosely based off Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues, so basically we had the opportunity to publicly voice some…

Free Rice

Free Rice

We have our alarm clock set to NPR in the morning so we can kind of know what’s going on in the world. This morning the news was about riots in Haiti because they can’t afford food. About a half an hour later there was a story on how Americans spent $1.7 billion on video games last month–50 % more than March last year. Something is wrong here. I heard about this website a while ago that I think is…

The best prank ever

The best prank ever

I heard about this the other day and couldn’t believe it. These guys posed as executives from ExxonMobil at an oil trade conference and made a presentation about a new alternative fuel source, vivoleum, which is supposedly made of human remains complete with vivoleum candles made out of wax and hair from barber shops and a memorial video. Read the whole story here.

No Gas on May 15, 2007

I’m usually not a fan of receiving forwarded emails, even less of being someone to forward them on to other unsuspecting victims. Somehow, I’ve managed to get through my life so far without any horrible bad luck or anyone dying or any of the other bad omens promised by chain emails. Nevertheless, every once in a while there comes a chain email that is almost worth heeding in spite of the annoying medium through which it is transmitted. However, I…

Parking Enforcement

Parking Enforcement

Here we have a service that nobody ever wanted. The Man has convinced us that we need this to protect our rights when indeed more rights are usurped than protected. The Man flourishes in this field of work because there is no avenue for redress. I understand that there is need for order and civility in where and when people can park their cars, especially in areas like college campuses. However, there is the same need for civility in the…

Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless is a textbook example of The Man in action. Here we have a company that provides a seemingly good service to its customers. They help people communicate over long distances bringing family, friends, and loved ones within the reach of their far-reaching wireless network where people that are “in” can make phone calls for free to each other. They boast of their customer support, their “new phone every two years,” and warantees on phones. Nevertheless, it is a…

Stick it to The Man

Stick it to The Man

I am writing today to protest many of the serially inflicted injustices that occur in the world today as a regular part of doing business as usual. These happen every day to regular people as a result of our phone service, retailing, insurance, credit companies, and especially government. There seems to be a nebulous force that exists that causes many of these injustices. To some he is known as “the powers that be,” “Big Brother,” or described with the overly…
