Tofu

Tofu

Tofu has never really sounded (or looked) good to me. I gave it a try once a few years back, but the dish was mediocre and I figured it proved that tofu was indeed gross. Then we went to Tokyo Joe’s the other day and Noel ordered tofu in his rice bowl. I prepared myself to be repulsed when we performed our typical ritual of sampling each others’ food, but was pleasantly surprised. When prepared well tofu is actually pretty…

The Cake Quest

The Cake Quest

One of the fun New Year’s resolutions I made was to make better cake.  (Noel is of course very supportive of this goal.)  I am a pretty good baker, but I have just never been very satisfied with my cakes. I bought some bleached flour (since it’s lighter than the unbleached we typically use) and set out looking for some recipes to try. (In case you were wondering, this is why my recipe board on Pinterest is mostly cakes.) My…

Saturday Morning Cravings

Saturday Morning Cravings

Being pregnant sometimes makes me lazy, especially on Saturday mornings. Every Saturday morning Noel will ask me what I want for breakfast and I will invariably respond with either “Einstein Bagels with honey almond schmear” or “donuts, mmmmm.” Noel is a good cook and very good at not giving into my cravings to eat out constantly. He’s kept me satisfied for weeks with delectable pancakes, ebelskivers (thanks for the pan for Christmas Danielle!), and omelets. Still, that craving for a…

The Whole Chicken

The Whole Chicken

Typically we are flexitarians, but when I’m pregnant I seem to crave meat a lot more than usual. The thing is, meat is expensive (our desire to eat “happy animals” doesn’t help this) and we by nature are kind of cheap. Well, we’ve come up with a pretty good solution that doesn’t compromise our checking account or our moral integrity: buying whole chickens. Seriously though, a whole chicken generally costs less per pound, makes me feel less guilty since I’m…

Oreos

Oreos

Image from smittenkitchen.com Growing up, both of my grandmas had freezers full of things that little kids love. One of my favorites that my McConkie grandma often had was homemade Oreo cookies. They were so much better than actual Oreos, and not just because they were homemade, but because they had cream cheese icing. When I got older I learned the best part, they weren’t even that difficult to make – all you needed was a cake mix, 3/4 C…

A Few Sweet Things

A Few Sweet Things

Cupcake Report – The St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes were  indeed tasty. Would I wait in line again? Probably not. Will I use their menu as a starting point for some delicious experiments? Most likely. Cooper – We think we’re hitting round two of teething. Drooling – check. Biting things – check. The kid has been such a fussy, restless little guy (both while asleep and awake) lately. He’s only happy if he’s trying to walk or playing with cabinet doors….

Good Taste

Good Taste

When we lived in Logan we lived down the street from a delicious Indian restaurant that was based out of a corner gas station. The food was so good that it’s location didn’t hinder business and was instead considered “quaint.” There were few occasions where a classic Chicken Tikka Masala or a surprisingly delicious Saag Paneer was not the correct answer. We even took Danielle, my sister-in-law, there after she ran her first marathon. There is one Indian restaurant in…

The First Thanksgiving

The First Thanksgiving

Today I am grateful for many things, but I will only list one: our dishwasher. Noel and I enjoy cooking (although becoming one with our “new” oven is another story), but we limited ourselves to the items Noel was able to realistically schedule into his Google calendar during a four hour period. Ten minute notifications for each step of the meal is what happens when someone obsessed with scheduling and list making marries someone that is obsessed with technology. Needless…

In the Email

In the Email

I get daily email recipes from a certain popular website. I found this suggested recipe particularly entertaining. Maybe I only know really anal and healthy vegetarians, but Captain Crunch? And the sausage? Worth It?

Worth It?

Noel and I love cooking. Anytime we eat something good at a restaurant we try to find a way to replicate it, and often come to enjoy our version even more – plus our way is generally cheaper. I am now ruined on Cafe Rio salads, store bought bread, packaged tortillas, and Olive Garden’s Zuppa Toscana. There are however some things that I believe are 100% worth paying for. For example, hazelnut gelato. After three days of attending to its…
