Repurposing

Repurposing

My parents are practically the original DIY gurus. I wish I could say I have the same skill in craftsmanship and eye for detail as my parents (95% of the things they’ve created are completely indistinguishable as being homemade), but currently I don’t. Perhaps I’ll get better at it with time. Also, my parents did a great job of schooling me in the art of frugality. I’m pretty good with budgets and know how to make the most of what…

Maybe I should see a trained professional

Maybe I should see a trained professional

I’ve only paid for a handful of haircuts in my life. Growing up my mom almost always had a friend that would cut my hair and I usually only got my haircut once or twice a year anyway. I trimmed my own bangs and sometimes added some layers when I got ambitious. The thick texture and varying shades of red helped camouflage any  minor errors I made and I was generally satisfied. Today my skills failed me though. It was…

Small World, Big Zoo

Small World, Big Zoo

When we first moved to Colorado we felt as if we were moving to a far away land where no one we’d ever known had gone before. We felt brave and adventurous, as well as a little lonely. As we’ve gone about our lives the past 5 months we’ve ran into a couple of people from our former life. These encounters always start the “It’s a small world” song looping annoyingly in my brain, but ultimately the experiences are a…

Night at the Museums

Night at the Museums

Saturday night 15 museums throughout the Denver area opened their doors to the public for free. We only made it to two of them (the Botanic Gardens and the Museum of Nature and Science) before Cooper insisted he be fed IMMEDIATELY.  The event was well attended, which made things a little crowded at times (Noel was getting tired of 10-year-olds cutting in front of him at all the hands-on exhibits :)). It was nice to be introduced to the cultural…

My First Dye Job

My First Dye Job

Don’t worry, I’m not talking about my hair. We have been somewhat stumped on what we should be for Halloween. (We’ve known what Cooper was going to be before he was born, thanks to my parents.) However, we were struck with sheer brilliance for Noel’s costume the other day when we were reading Cooper one of his new library acquisitions. I won’t ruin the surprise, but it did entail finding Noel a yellow shirt. We decided we would just dye…

Now Accepting Reservations

Now Accepting Reservations

Our Guest Room/Office/Gym/Sewing Room is now complete. We opted for a luxurious, and I really do mean luxurious, queen sized futon (a brand new 8 inch loft microfiber covered mattress with a steal of a deal, craigslist find frame). Don’t be deceived by the fact that it’s a futon, one of the mattress reviewers said the only way his wife with fibromyalgia could get a good night’s rest was by sleeping on it. Very comfy. The thing is begging to…

The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour

Our house is finally ready for the long awaited grand tour. (Getting it to this state has been at least long awaited by me.) Come on in and let me show you around. If you need to take your shoes off, please feel free to sit on our antique church pew (my 16th birthday gift; At the time I was so disappointed that it wasn’t a car.) and store your shoes in our handy cubbies. Then have a seat on…

Goodbye Permasweat

Goodbye Permasweat

I’ve been meaning to get some special sports detergent for awhile to give our stinky workout clothes some TLC, but just haven’t gotten around to buying some online or going to a specialty store. Well, I was looking at my dear sister’s wedding registry and discovered that Tide had come out with a Sport detergent. While at Target yesterday I perused the detergent aisle and discovered that they had coupons for this item. Who can say no to saving $1.50?…

Home Improvement

Home Improvement

When I was a child I spent a lot of time at Ernst with my parents while they shopped for the constant remodel they were doing on our house. At first I didn’t mind since they had free bags of popcorn for kids and I enjoyed playing in the display kitchens. However, over the years of repeated hostage situations, I developed a deep loathing for home improvement stores. Lately, Noel and I have spent more and more time wandering through…

Mozart Effect

Mozart Effect

It is uncertain whether or not Cooper will turn into a genius by listening to classical music, but we can at least make sure he’s cultured. Yesterday we took him to  Red Rocks to listen to a free concert by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. It was packed, but the venue was gorgeous and the music was enjoyable. Just wish someone would have warned us about the 40+ flights of stairs, we looked like fools hefting our stroller around.
