Good Taste

Good Taste

When we lived in Logan we lived down the street from a delicious Indian restaurant that was based out of a corner gas station. The food was so good that it’s location didn’t hinder business and was instead considered “quaint.” There were few occasions where a classic Chicken Tikka Masala or a surprisingly delicious Saag Paneer was not the correct answer. We even took Danielle, my sister-in-law, there after she ran her first marathon. There is one Indian restaurant in…

One Year Older and Wiser Too

One Year Older and Wiser Too

The one who loves cake had a birthday. The oven and I were able to come to some sort of an agreement, so I think it ended up being a happy birthday after all. This is me not posting a tribute post, as per birthday boy’s request, so I will say no more 🙂

Wits’ End

Wits’ End

It’s not me, it’s the oven. I swear. At first I was worried it was me, but after researching baking at high altitude, testing my baking powder, restraining myself from over-mixing, and wrapping damp strips of cloth around the pans, the cake is still only one inch tall. There’s no way I can slice each layer in half in order to assemble the four layer cake it was intended to be. How I wish it was just a simple error…

The First Thanksgiving

The First Thanksgiving

Today I am grateful for many things, but I will only list one: our dishwasher. Noel and I enjoy cooking (although becoming one with our “new” oven is another story), but we limited ourselves to the items Noel was able to realistically schedule into his Google calendar during a four hour period. Ten minute notifications for each step of the meal is what happens when someone obsessed with scheduling and list making marries someone that is obsessed with technology. Needless…

Food, that’s what I’m grateful for today.

Food, that’s what I’m grateful for today.

I know we often clump this one with our automatic I-didn’t-even-turn-on-my-brain-to-think-of-this-response answers to what we’re grateful for, but I really am grateful for it. Food is the reason why Cooper no longer screams at us the whole time we try to eat dinner. It’s also the reason why I’ve been getting more sleep. Having to bathe Cooper practically every day is completely worth it. Today, I am feeling especially grateful for soup. Snowy day, sunny day, special occasion, or sick…

The flambouyant matador’s most unusual chili

The flambouyant matador’s most unusual chili

Happy Halloween! We went to our church’s Halloween dinner/chili cookoff/spooky dessert contest/game night/trunk-or-treat/costume parade last night. Naturally we had to put in our efforts in the food categories. Although Audrey’s double layer pumpkin cheesecake didn’t win any official prizes (Audrey wants it clearly noted that there were no awards based on taste for the desserts), it was the only dessert that was completely gone at the end of the night. I went out on a limb with the chili and…

When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up

Even though I went through 5 1/2 years of school to get a degree and a teaching license, I often find myself considering different career paths. Here are my current favorites: 1. Event Planner – I actually had a couple of summer jobs where I did this. I’m a planner and I like schedules. There’s just something exciting about orchestrating the lives of hundreds of people, even if only for a few days or hours. I loved the adrenaline rush…

Pomegranates

Pomegranates

Yesterday, I submerged a pomegranate under water and carefully peeled away the thick skin. As I detached the ruby gems, I thought about one of my great grandmothers. I always loved visiting the McConkie residence in St. George, UT.  Situated on a fairly large lot, the backyard was bordered by bushes and populated by pecan trees. We’d often visit during the nut harvest. The adults would shake the trees with tall poles and I would collect the fallen nuts into…

We’ve Managed to Keep Him Alive for 5 months

We’ve Managed to Keep Him Alive for 5 months

We’ve been doing some much needed weeding to prepare the yard for winter (we inherited the yard with weeds, this wasn’t all our doing). Yesterday after Cooper and I went for a walk I quickly did some work on one of the flower beds in the front yard. Cooper sat in the jogging stroller while I worked, so when I cleaned everything up I pulled him into the garage with me. I stepped into the house to put my gardening…

“No More Happiness”

“No More Happiness”

I am an avid consumer of dairy. I love it: Cheese, milk, ice cream, yogurt, butter, you name it. Essentially, dairy makes food taste good. Lately though I’m wondering if my love of dairy has become a problem. I have a baby that is constantly gassy (sometimes it makes him cry). Noel and I have done extensive research (thank you Google – the source of all wisdom and knowledge), but nothing we’ve tried yet has seemed to make any sort…
