Be the Good

Be the Good

I remember having a conversation with my mother when I was pregnant with Cooper and telling her that I couldn’t listen to the news because it freaked me out and made me wonder what I was doing bringing a child into such a terrible world. My mom told me she’d felt the same way when she’d had me and pointed out that I’d turned out okay. I left the conversation feeling less worried and the thought came to me, “Well,…

Motherhood and Spirituality

Motherhood and Spirituality

At times being a mom helps me be more spiritual, but at other times I sometimes feel that it tests my spirituality. (Generally at the same time that my children are testing my patience.) Today we stayed home from church thanks to a cold the whole family caught. At first I was really bummed because I felt my Sunday was ruined, but then I thought of an article my good friend, Lina, sent me. The article, “Spiritual Growth for Young…

Little White Dress

Little White Dress

I’ve always wanted a little girl. I was not necessarily disappointed when we found out Cooper was a boy, but I was disappointed that shopping for and dressing a boy was fairly unexciting. When we first brought Ellen home from the hospital I think I made her a new headband every day for a week. It drove Noel crazy.  “You really like dressing her up don’t you?” He asked. Guilty as charged; I do enjoy it. Months before Ellen was…

Easter/Blessing/Spring Break

Easter/Blessing/Spring Break

We had quite the busy Easter weekend. My family made the long drive from Utah, most of them sacrificing cooler Spring Break plans so they could cuddle the new baby,   play with a crazy little boy, generally infringe on each others’ space, install a whole house fan and lay insulation, watch a two-year-old collect plastic eggs, and be there for our sweet little girl’s baby blessing. It was nice to have our house full on such a special weekend….

Summery Weekend

Summery Weekend

The weather here has been so warm lately with temperatures in the 80s the past two days. Today we’re returning to a more traditional weather pattern with rain/snow in the forecast, so we made the most of the weekend. In true summer fashion, we slept in. Of course tuned in to four inspiring sessions of General Conference. (Were there a lot of talks on parenting or was that just what I needed to hear?) In between sessions we did yard…

This Weekend

This Weekend

Two things are happening this weekend that make me excited. The first is our church’s General Conference which is always inspiring. (Plus you can watch church in your pajamas which is nice 🙂 ) The second is Earth Hour 2012 . In the grand scope of things I suppose it’s not as important as the first (I mean we’re talking eternity vs life on earth), but it’s a good reminder that “everyone can take personal responsibility for the future of…

Goodbye February

Goodbye February

Although it went against the intuition of all our family members and defied a few laws of physics (most specifically gravity), February was NOT baby month. Even with the extra day, we just couldn’t pull it off. However, March is a more pleasant month in my opinion (take no offense Groundhog Day) so I guess I’m not that put out (I mean, you know, other than being super uncomfortable) that this baby will be born in March. Even though February…

Sundays and Sun

Sundays and Sun

Still no baby, but it won’t be too much longer. Every Sunday we drive by the Unitarian church and read their sermon topic off their sign. They always have such interesting topics and some Sundays it is so tempting to attend their one hour sermon instead of our three hour block. (One Sunday I was sitting in the last hour of church and one of the other primary instructors pulled out this cartoon.) The past couple of Sundays I’ve dutifully…

How Considerate

How Considerate

About a month ago Noel got assigned to be in charge of a church activity on February 24th. When he told me I was mad irritated in disbelief surprised. I heatedly said to him, “Are you kidding me? Don’t they know we’re going to have a newborn?” (My typically trustworthy intuition has been frustratingly off lately, but that’s another story.) As the event neared we made preparations for a low-key “Garden Expo” and I continued to complain. Noel simply told…

Information Diet and a Related Dilemma

Information Diet and a Related Dilemma

We never really set food diet goals at our house, but this year we set some information diet goals. As much as I love technology, it’s sometimes shameful to realize how addicted and dare I say obsessed I can be with it. For 2012 Noel and I set some goals to free up some of our time and help us be more productive. Limit the number of times a day we check Google Reader. 90 minute email challenge (Check out…
